A practical guide to Colorado mule and white-tailed deer, hunt codes, primary and secondary draws, preference points, access, CWD, recovery, and first steps.

Official deer page

01 / Overview

Start with the shape of the hunt.

Colorado mule deer occupy alpine basins, high forest, oak brush, sagebrush, canyon country, foothills, agricultural valleys, and plains river corridors. White-tailed deer are concentrated mainly in eastern river and farm country.

Most deer opportunity is limited by hunt code through the primary draw, secondary draw, leftover list, or reissue process. Selected white-tailed and rifle opportunities can be over the counter under current restrictions.

A first deer plan should favor a reachable GMU, repeat scouting, legal access, conservative shooting, fast recovery, and complete CWD and carcass planning.

02 / Opportunity

Is this a good state for this hunt?

Preference points can improve first-choice primary-draw priority, but quotas and demand change every year.

Second through fourth choices, the secondary draw, leftovers, reissues, and selected over-the-counter licenses do not use preference points.

The printed hunt code, GMU, legal animal, season, and method control even when nearby deer look similar.

How the system fits together.

First choice controls points

A successful first-choice primary-draw license uses the applicant's deer preference points; later-choice and secondary licenses do not.

One hunt code is a complete package

Match species, sex, GMU, season, method, public or private restriction, and every special note.

OTC is narrow, not statewide

Confirm the current eligible deer type, GMU, season, method, and purchase limits before relying on direct purchase.

CWD can add mandatory work

Check whether the hunt code or GMU requires testing and follow current transport and carcass rules.

04 / Planning strategy

Choose repeatable access before chasing a point total.

Compare draw history, hunt code, access, habitat, pressure, travel, method, CWD, and recovery before applying.

Separate a realistic deer hunt from a premium first-choice goal, then use later choices and direct-sale pathways intentionally.

Reduce the GMU to several legal routes around current forage, water, bedding cover, travel, wind, pressure, and pack-out time.

05 / Seasons

Learn the categories. Check the dates.

Colorado publishes deer opportunity through the exact brochure, hunt code or license, GMU, legal animal, method, dates, and eligibility. Those details can change between cycles.

Use the current CPW brochure and corrections, issued license, Hunting Atlas, live status or closure report, property signs, and controlling land manager for authoritative dates, boundaries, methods, access, and reporting duties.

06 / Habitat

Where they live.

01

Alpine and high forest

Basins, timberline, avalanche paths, snow, weather, migration, and steep recovery shape mule deer.

02

Oak brush and sagebrush

Browse, water, burns, roads, private parcels, visibility, and pressure control use.

03

Plains river and farm

Cottonwoods, crops, shelterbelts, homes, livestock, permission, and safe directions define white-tailed opportunity.

07 / Methods

Match the method to the exact hunt.

Rifle

Confirm season, fluorescent clothing, legal firearm, safe backstop, and a conservative range limit.

Archery

Prioritize wind, quiet access, legal equipment, tracking, heat, and recovery.

Muzzleloader

Read the current legal equipment and optics rules rather than transferring assumptions from another state.

Current legal methods, ammunition rules, and hunt-specific restrictions come from CDFW and the applicable land manager.

08 / Beginner strategy

If I wanted to start, what would I actually do?

  1. 01

    Read the current Colorado rules

Begin with the current official brochure and species page for deer. Write down the license, hunt code, GMU, dates, legal animal, method, limit, and reporting requirements.

  2. 02

    Confirm how the license works

Determine whether the exact hunt uses the primary draw, preference or weighted points, secondary draw, leftover or reissue sale, over-the-counter purchase, special permit, stamp, HIP, or another current authorization.

  3. 03

    Prove the GMU and access

Confirm the legal boundary, public and private parcels, signed Walk-In enrollment, SWA or state-trust rules, roads, vehicles, fire restrictions, weather, closures, and a backup route.

  4. 04

    Scout the real constraints

Record hunt-code boundary, ownership, roads, forage, water, bedding, tracks, droppings, glassing points, wind, pressure, weather, fire, CWD duties, and recovery time.

  5. 05

    Practice the complete sequence

Practice mule and white-tailed identification, glassing, navigation, field positions, range restraint, tracking, tag validation, recovery, cooling, CWD handling, and transport.

  6. 06

    Recheck, tag, inspect, and report

Immediately before hunting, recheck the brochure, access, weather, roads, live status, and documents. Afterward, complete every tag validation, report, inspection, seal, CWD sample, and transport duty on time.
