Start with the shape of the hunt.
Colorado supports Merriam's turkeys in mountain and foothill forest and Rio Grande turkeys in river bottoms, agricultural corridors, and parts of the plains.
Spring includes limited licenses and over-the-counter opportunity in eligible GMUs. Fall, late, leftover, and reissued paths have different hunt codes, legal birds, dates, and areas.
Turkey teaches access, sign, calling, safe setups, positive identification, close-range restraint, tag validation, recovery, and field care.

Is this a good state for this hunt?
Over-the-counter spring turkey can be approachable, but GMU validity, private access, weather, and pressure still control success.
Turkey preference points are separate from big game, and current rules can allow one point in both spring and fall draw cycles.
A turkey license never grants private access or permission to cross closed property.

Scout legal access before practicing calls.
Choose a GMU close enough for dawn and evening scouting, then prove roads, parking, public parcels, and private boundaries.
Map roosts, tracks, droppings, feeding, strut areas, openings, water, and pressure without repeatedly disturbing birds.
Build quiet entries, safe setups, simple calling, patient identification, and a backup property into the plan.

Shotgun
Pattern a legal load, confirm method rules, know the effective range, and identify the complete bird.
Archery
Confirm legal equipment, concealment, range, shot angle, follow-up, and recovery.
Calling and ambush
Use restrained calling or travel routes while never stalking a sound that could be another hunter.
Current legal methods, ammunition rules, and hunt-specific restrictions come from CDFW and the applicable land manager.

Begin with the current official brochure and species page for wild turkey. Write down the license, hunt code, GMU, dates, legal animal, method, limit, and reporting requirements.

Confirm how the license works
Determine whether the exact hunt uses the primary draw, preference or weighted points, secondary draw, leftover or reissue sale, over-the-counter purchase, special permit, stamp, HIP, or another current authorization.

Prove the GMU and access
Confirm the legal boundary, public and private parcels, signed Walk-In enrollment, SWA or state-trust rules, roads, vehicles, fire restrictions, weather, closures, and a backup route.

Scout the real constraints
Record license validity, GMU, ownership, permission, roosts, tracks, feeding and strut areas, water, snow, hunters, livestock, and safe setups.

Practice the complete sequence
Practice turkey identification, calling restraint, sitting still, patterning or archery, range limits, safe setups, tag validation, recovery, possession, and field care.

Recheck, tag, inspect, and report
Immediately before hunting, recheck the brochure, access, weather, roads, live status, and documents. Afterward, complete every tag validation, report, inspection, seal, CWD sample, and transport duty on time.
