Wyoming
Deer.

A practical guide to Wyoming mule and white-tailed deer, resident general and nonresident region licenses, limited quota, license types, points, CWD, and access.

Official deer page

01 / Overview

Start with the shape of the hunt.

Mule deer occupy sagebrush, basin, badland, foothill, mountain, and migration country, while white-tailed deer concentrate in river bottoms, farms, timber, and eastern habitats.

Residents can buy one general deer license over the counter for areas open to General. Nonresidents draw a region-general license, while limited-quota areas and reduced-price doe or fawn licenses use exact hunt areas and types.

Type 3 full-price licenses are white-tailed deer only. Types 6 and 7 can allow doe or fawn mule deer or whitetails, while Type 8 is doe or fawn white-tailed deer only.

02 / Opportunity

Is this a good state for this hunt?

A resident general license can create recurring opportunity, but every area retains its own dates, legal animal, antler restrictions, and access.

Nonresident full-price deer preference points affect the first choice in the point draw and must be purchased separately in the point period.

Leftovers often reflect difficult public access, private-land dependence, low density, or a narrow legal animal, so access comes before purchase.

How the system fits together.

General and limited quota differ

General validity follows the current hunt-area table; a limited-quota license is valid only for its area and type.

Nonresident general is regional

A nonresident region license applies only to general areas in that region and does not open limited-quota areas.

Type 3 means whitetail only

Do not use a Type 3 deer license on mule deer.

CWD travels with the carcass

Keep required evidence while following current focus-area sampling, head and spine, disposal, and interstate transport rules.

04 / Planning strategy

Choose the deer, license type, and access together.

Compare deer type, area or region, license type, points, odds, draw pool, ownership, HMA or Walk-In rules, season, CWD, and recovery.

Scout short legal routes around browse, water, bedding, migration, wind, glassing, private edges, roads, pressure, weather, fire, and pack-out.

Treat a reduced-price or leftover license as useful only after verifying an ethical legal animal and enough practical access.

05 / Seasons

Learn the categories. Check the dates.

Wyoming publishes deer opportunity through the exact license, region or hunt area, license type, full or reduced price, legal animal, method, season, eligibility, and land status. Those details can change between cycles.

Use the current final regulation and corrections, issued license and carcass coupon, Hunt Planner, live mortality status, Access Yes property page, field signs, and controlling land manager for authoritative dates, boundaries, methods, access, and reporting duties.

06 / Habitat

Where they live.

01

Sage and basin mule deer

Browse, water, migration, wind, roads, winter range, and private boundaries shape access.

02

Mountain mule deer

Burns, alpine edge, timber, snow, migration, grizzly country, and recovery matter.

03

River and farm whitetail

Cottonwoods, crops, permission, homes, livestock, and short safe lanes control opportunity.

07 / Methods

Match the method to the exact hunt.

Regular firearm season

Confirm area, type, legal animal, clothing, field position, backstop, and conservative range.

Special archery season

Carry the required archery license and confirm the area dates and license validity.

Specialty weapon

A Type 0 or exact season has its own equipment and area restrictions.

Current legal methods, ammunition rules, and hunt-specific restrictions come from CDFW and the applicable land manager.

08 / Beginner strategy

If I wanted to start, what would I actually do?

  1. 01

    Read the current Wyoming rules

Begin with the current official regulation and planning source for deer. Write down the license, area, region, type, price class, dates, legal animal, method, limit, closure, and reporting duties.

  2. 02

    Confirm how the license works

Determine whether the hunt uses a resident general license, nonresident region-general draw, limited-quota draw, full or reduced price, preference or random draw, leftover sale, mortality limit, special permit, or another exact structure.

  3. 03

Prove the land and access program

Confirm public and private parcels, state or federal terms, tribal authority, HMA permission slip and ranch rules, Walk-In species and dates, roads, vehicles, fire, camping, winter closures, and a backup route.

  4. 04

    Scout the actual constraints

Record deer type, region or area, license type, points, land, HMA or Walk-In terms, CWD, browse, water, bedding, migration, wind, pressure, weather, fire, and recovery.

  5. 05

    Practice the complete sequence

Practice identification, map and type use, field positions, range restraint, tracking, carcass coupon validation, evidence, cooling, CWD handling, transport, and reporting.

  6. 06

    Recheck, tag, register, and report

Immediately before hunting, recheck the regulation, live mortality status, access, weather, roads, and documents. Afterward, complete every carcass-coupon validation, evidence, CWD transport, tooth or sample, registration, pelt tag, possession, and report duty on time.
