Wyoming
Gray Wolf.
A precise guide to Wyoming's trophy-game and predatory gray-wolf classifications, management boundaries, seasons, mortality limits, licenses, and reporting.
Official gray wolf page ↗01 / Overview
Start with the shape of the hunt.
Wyoming manages gray wolves under two legal classifications and three management areas.
Inside the northwest Wolf Trophy Game Management Area, wolf hunting uses a trophy-game license, hunt areas, seasons, mortality limits, and live closure checks. Outside that area, wolves are predatory animals and can currently be taken year-round without a license under separate law.
A seasonal boundary can change classification by date. Yellowstone National Park, the Wind River Reservation, federal closures, private land, and other authorities remain separate.
02 / Opportunity
Is this a good state for this hunt?
The predatory-area rule is broad, but it never authorizes shooting inside a trophy area, park, reservation, closed federal unit, private property without permission, or an unsafe place.
Trophy-area hunting requires the correct license and live area status, followed by prompt report and registration duties.
Large coyotes and domestic dogs can be mistaken for wolves, and a map or highway boundary must be proven before a shot.
04 / Planning strategy
Resolve the legal classification before identifying a target.
Download the current wolf area map and regulations and mark the trophy, seasonal, predatory, park, refuge, and reservation boundaries offline.
Confirm current mortality status, legal access, private permission, roads, homes, livestock, working dogs, coyotes, safe backstops, and reporting contacts.
Use optics and time to identify the whole animal and withhold the shot whenever species, boundary, or authority is uncertain.
05 / Seasons
Learn the categories. Check the dates.
Wyoming publishes gray wolf opportunity through the exact license, region or hunt area, license type, full or reduced price, legal animal, method, season, eligibility, and land status. Those details can change between cycles.
Use the current final regulation and corrections, issued license and carcass coupon, Hunt Planner, live mortality status, Access Yes property page, field signs, and controlling land manager for authoritative dates, boundaries, methods, access, and reporting duties.

Where they live.
Northwest mountain forest
Pack activity, elk, snow, grizzlies, park or refuge boundaries, and trophy-area limits overlap.
Seasonal management area
The same ground can change classification by date, making the current map and calendar essential.
Predatory area
Broad take authority still intersects private land, livestock, dogs, roads, homes, and safe shooting.
07 / Methods
Match the method to the exact hunt.
Observation and identification
Use body proportions, tail, ears, muzzle, gait, companions, tracks, and behavior together.
Legal hunting method
Confirm classification, license, dates, area, light, aircraft, vehicle, road, firearm, and land rules.
Reporting and registration
Carry the current contacts and complete the duty for the exact classification and location.
Current legal methods, ammunition rules, and hunt-specific restrictions come from CDFW and the applicable land manager.
08 / Beginner strategy
If I wanted to start, what would I actually do?
- 01
Read the current Wyoming rules
Begin with the current official regulation and planning source for gray wolf. Write down the license, area, region, type, price class, dates, legal animal, method, limit, closure, and reporting duties.
Official resource ↗ - 02
Confirm how the license works
Determine whether the hunt uses a resident general license, nonresident region-general draw, limited-quota draw, full or reduced price, preference or random draw, leftover sale, mortality limit, special permit, or another exact structure.
- 03
Prove the land and access program
Confirm public and private parcels, state or federal terms, tribal authority, HMA permission slip and ranch rules, Walk-In species and dates, roads, vehicles, fire, camping, winter closures, and a backup route.
- 04
Scout the actual constraints
Record classification by date, hunt area, live status, park and reservation lines, public and private land, wolf and coyote sign, livestock, dogs, roads, homes, backstops, and reporting access.
- 05
Practice the complete sequence
Practice wolf, coyote, domestic-dog, and fox identification at realistic distances, movement, snow, brush, and low light, plus offline boundary use, coupon validation, reporting, registration, and the decision not to shoot.
- 06
Recheck, tag, register, and report
Immediately before hunting, recheck the regulation, live mortality status, access, weather, roads, and documents. Afterward, complete every carcass-coupon validation, evidence, CWD transport, tooth or sample, registration, pelt tag, possession, and report duty on time.
